Dear Colleagues
We cordially like to invite you to join the annual conference of the World Association of Lesson Studies (WALS) in 2011 hosted by the University of Tokyo, Japan.
WALS is dedicated to the advancement of high quality educational research to enhance teaching practice and student learning. The theme of WALS 2011, “Professional Community for Enhancing Learning”, has been regarded as a core mission of Lesson Study in its long history in Japan. More recently, it has become a central issue of educational practice and its innovation. Even though Lesson Study originated in Japan nearly a century ago, it has spread its wings worldwide and is currently flourishing in several countries as a tool to promote the professional development of teachers, often in ways which are more enthusiastic and more powerful than Japan. Lesson study is now growing in diversity of approaches responding to various social, cultural and political contexts and applied to different disciplines. We sincerely believe that WALS 2011 will provide you with ample opportunities to help understand better more sophisticated approaches for lesson studies and possibilities of its application in action.
WALS 2010 in Brunei attracted about 600 participants comprising academic researchers, teachers and educational administrators from more than 15 countries. WALS as an association is growing to be one of the most powerful global associations of educational research. We are honored to prepare a key stage for the progress in organizing the annual conference in 2011.
WALS 2011 will have an expert seminar as a pre-conference event on November 25 with the main conference on November 26 and 27. The main conference will include keynote speeches, symposiums, sessions for paper presentation, case studies and poster presentations. Optional school tours to observe Japanese classrooms and lesson studies at elementary school, junior high school and senior high school will be held on November 28.
On behalf of the organizing committee of WALS 2011 conference in Japan, we welcome your participation and contribution to this conference. We look forward to the sharing of research and practice in Tokyo, Japan.
