Admission Information

We welcome international students who would like to study and research educational sciences with us.

Undergraduate Program

We have a unique university educational system that is somewhat different from those in other countries. For information on general education and admissions for prospective undergraduate students, please refer to the University of Tokyo website, in particular please view the “Prospective Students” and “Undergraduate Admissions” sites.

The Graduate School of Education

The Graduate School of Education has a Master’s and Ph.D. degree programs, as well a separate non-degree International Research Student Program available to students who wish to further their study in the educational sciences.

Classes are generally held in Japanese and students wishing to enter the Graduate School of Education are required to be able to read, write, and speak Japanese fluently. However, proficiency in Japanese is not obligatory for the Ph.D. program in Physical and Health Education, as it has been designed so that students are able to complete the program by taking classes given in English. Having said that, there are classes that are still given in Japanese even in this program.

Master’s and Ph.D. Programs

The Master’s program is for students who have a bachelor’s degree at the time of entrance, and the Ph.D. program is for students who have gained a Master’s degree at the time of entrance.

To obtain information on the general education and admissions for both the Master’s and Ph.D. programs, please refer to the following page first (in Japanese only), and then, please contact the Student Support Team (see below) if you need to obtain detailed information on admissions. To obtain supplementary information about the Ph.D. program in Physical and Health Education, please refer to the following page, “東京大学大学院教育学研究科身体教育学コース博士課程学生募集要項補足説明(PDF)”.

This program is most appropriate for students whose research theme necessitate some research to be carried out in Japan. This is a non-degree program and no certificates are awarded on completion of the program. This program is not a preparatory education program for entering the Master’s and Ph.D. programs.
