We welcome international students who would like to study and research educational sciences with us.
We have a unique university educational system that is somewhat different from those in other countries. For information on general education and admissions for prospective undergraduate students, please refer to the University of Tokyo website, in particular please view the “Prospective Students” and “Undergraduate Admissions” sites.
The Graduate School of Education
The Graduate School of Education has a Master’s and Ph.D. degree programs, as well a separate non-degree International Research Student Program available to students who wish to further their study in the educational sciences.
Classes are generally held in Japanese and students wishing to enter the Graduate School of Education are required to be able to read, write, and speak Japanese fluently. However, proficiency in Japanese is not obligatory for the Ph.D. program in Physical and Health Education, as it has been designed so that students are able to complete the program by taking classes given in English. Having said that, there are classes that are still given in Japanese even in this program.
Master’s and Ph.D. Programs
The Master’s program is for students who have a bachelor’s degree at the time of entrance, and the Ph.D. program is for students who have gained a Master’s degree at the time of entrance.
To obtain information on the general education and admissions for both the Master’s and Ph.D. programs, with the exception of the Ph.D. program in Physical and Health Education, please refer to the following page first (in Japanese only), and then, please contact the Student Support Team (see below) to obtain detailed information on admissions and the necessary application forms. Please contact the Student Support Team directly to obtain information about the Ph.D. program in Physical and Health Education.
International Research Student Program
Candidates for the International Research Student Program generally are already enrolled in a Ph.D. program at graduate schools outside Japan. This program is most appropriate for students whose theses necessitate research in Japan. The International Research Student Program is not a preparatory education program for entering the Master’s and Ph.D. programs.
Information on application (available only in Japanese) and the application forms for the International Research Student Program are available from the website. The entrance period for the program is April or September, with a deadline for the submission of completed application for the April entrance in October of the previous year or April for the September entrance. For more detailed information on the program, please refer to the Q&A webpage (available only in Japanese) or contact the Student Support Team of the Graduate School of Education.
