THREE RESEAECH UNITS
Issues associated with Core Academic Competences are extremely broad and deep. The three basic research units of the CRCAC are:
- Basic Research/Analysis of Academic Competences
- Analysis of School Functions
- Evaluation of Alternative Education Systems
First and foremost, the underlying theoretical constructs of Core Academic Competencies require empirical clarification. In addition, CRCAC seeks to conduct research relative to actual classroom practice. With these goals in mind, CRCAC is pursuing research activities in the following three areas:
- Theoretical Analysis/Research
- Surveys /Participatory Action Research/International Comparisons
- Society /Practitioner/International Cooperation
RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
CRCAC’s organizational structure and activities are as follows.
UNIT 1: Basic Research/Analysis of Academic Competences
- to undertake theoretical investigations of existing achievement tests, note their weaknesses, and develop new competency tests;
- to survey elementary, junior and senior high school students and conduct action research with some student groups; and
- to assess learner competencies and support learning processes in classrooms in coordination with school teachers.
UNIT 2: Analysis of School Functions
- to provide theoretical analysis of the problems schools face today;
- to undertake detailed participatory action research in schools attached to universities and other specified school districts; and
- to investigate, with school teachers and administrators, the practical application of these theoretical and empirical findings.
UNIT 3: Evaluation of Alternative Educational Systems
- to analyze problems of today’s public school system and establish and evaluate alternative educational arrangements;
- to investigate educational reforms and their social implications in a variety of national contexts; and
- to exchange views on educational alternatives with national and local governmental policy-makers and further promote international research cooperation.
General Unit
Based on the research findings obtained in these three units, the General Unit will integrate these findings, and formulate and propose a new system as a “guideline for improving Core Academic Competences.”
